Trump Administration to Distribute Half Food Stamp Benefits in the Coming Month

The US government stated it would supply partial support to millions of nutritional assistance recipients as the protracted federal closure neared a historic length.

Benefit Decrease Information

Amid mounting uncertainty for the around 42 million people enrolled in the food assistance program, the USDA indicated it would use emergency money to maintain assistance, although at merely 50% of the usual level recipients usually get.

Funding for the initiative legally expired on the weekend due to the budget standoff, now in its 34th day with little indication of ending.

Legal Actions

The announcement came in a judicial submission after previous refusals to provide emergency funding on claimed legal grounds. A judicial authority had ruled the administration could not refuse program funds because of the shutdown.

After the court order, the president announced it would be "honored" to authorize emergency funding for the program.

Implementation Challenges

Authorities noted that funds could begin distribution by midweek, but highlighted the need for further guidance from the legal system on how to legally redirect money for SNAP benefits.

  • Several local governments have indicated it will take multiple days or even longer periods to issue assistance to vulnerable recipients.
  • Long queues have been reported at charities around the nation.
  • In several regions, stadium car parks were repurposed into assistance centers.

Local Emergency Responses

Several states, including New York, Oregon, and Virginia, issued crisis measures to supply interim money for benefits. However, these sums were projected to be a fraction of the regular federal funding.

The federal costs for SNAP amount to approximately $8 billion each month throughout the United States.
