Pat Cummins Poised for a Major Role in Ashes Series

Test match action

Pat Cummins has secured 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.

"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, not only the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Injury History

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of back injuries, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from several home seasons in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the series.

Bailey noted that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the first Test as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
