Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
